A Nigerian ride-hailing platform, operated with the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria, and built on a subscription rather than a cut of the work.
Why there is no commission
A commission grows with the work. Take a percentage of every trip and the driver who does more hands over more, for a service that costs no more to provide on the hundredth trip than on the first. Over a week that is the difference between a car that is worth running and one that is not.
So MyKaab charges ₦30,000 a month and takes 0 per cent of the fare. Commission is a column in the rate card, on every class of car, and it is set to zero. It is a figure you can check rather than a promise, which is the only reason it is worth stating.
What that changes for a rider
It makes the bill explicable. There is no platform cut to bury, so every line on a quote is either the fare or a levy that is passed on in full — ₦380 a trip, between passenger cover and the state road fund. Nothing is added at the end, because there is nothing to add.
How the platform and the union divide the work
MyKaab operates the technology. AUATON keeps authority over its own membership. That line is drawn deliberately and it is drawn in the software: a driver declares membership, and only a chapter officer can confirm it. MyKaab cannot add somebody to the union and does not issue union cards.
Documents are the platform’s side of it — driver licence and vehicle papers, checked before a first trip and again at expiry. Two checks, two parties, and neither stands in for the other.
What we will not do
- Quote a price we then change. The rate in force is what your app shows before you book and what your receipt itemises afterwards.
- Charge a driver for cover they did not choose. Health cover, life cover and a pension are opt-in, and charged through the subscription rather than taken from each fare.
- Keep your phone number in a stranger’s call log. Calls go through a number belonging to neither party.
- Hold trip recordings indefinitely. They are kept long enough to settle a dispute and then deleted.
